What is writing?
Various styles, forms and uses employed throughout the history of writing
What is writing? Despite being an extravert writing has been my only form of unlocking my dreams, revealing my heart and finding the words that always seem to escape my lips. This one question of what is writing has so many answers. Of course if you have found this site and you are reading this than you used Google by entering what is writing.
The first definition that comes up is this:
Than on the front page of Google there is About.com that says, ask 20 writers what is writing and you will get 20 different answers. I have to admit I disagree with the first quote from Richard Peck, who claims that writing is not self-expression. Writing can be anything you want it to be, its another form of art, art is a form of expression.
For me writing has been the only way I have been able to pull back my feelings observe them, understand them and finally grow into my emotions. Laying words out on a piece of paper is much harder than saying them. Thought goes into writing, feelings, trust, wishes, dreams and so much more.
The question of what is writing is deep already right? We have not even scratched the surface. Psychologists use writing to stir the workings of a stale mind, teachers use the written word to analyze their students and break through into the genius that would otherwise be hidden. What is writing? Writing is freedom.
Writing is not only a form of art, but like Richard Peck said a method of communication as well. According to the Historian.net tokens with symbols have been dated back to 4100-3800 BCE, eventually symbols and pictures would mean something much in the same way that language is transcribed today.
If you ask the British Museum what is writing than they would answer you in terms of giving a brief history of the writing system, its development, earliest founders and finally the power of writing.
Writing is therefore among the most powerful tools we have. Some ancient peoples considered it so important and so powerful that they believed it was invented by gods, deities or mythical heroes. Some ancient Egyptians, for example, believed that writing was the creation of the god Thoth. (BritishMuseum.org)
Ironically I have studied Thoth, the Egyptian god regarded as the translator for the Sun God Ra, translating Ra’s will into speech. Also Thoth has been related to the mind of God, the logos or logic of Plato and finally an entirely different branch of reading tarot.
What is writing? Well if you ask me, it is whatever you want it to be. But along with the question of what is writing comes the issue of how to write. Get ready to find out the answer to the question that brought you here, what is writing. Writing is a form of expression, a means of communication, rooted in documenting time, recording life lessons and the very foundation upon which we operate.
